Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Warriors Group
Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and presented the first table of heroes who will split off from the main group to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
With 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.
At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might appear mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
To begin with, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.
A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the narrative’s action—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the character, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each member has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks revenge.
- Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and advises that it is a nasty place.
- The warrior and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
- Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the party access places they normally couldn’t.
- Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
- The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.
This leaves them no alternative but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.
What’s Next?
Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.
